Money Matters Survey 2025

Thank you for your interest in taking part in this survey.

In October 2023 we ran a survey exploring the financial circumstances of those working behind the scenes in film, TV and cinema. The findings ‒ published in January 2024 in our Money Matters report ‒ provided clear evidence of the financial hardship that many faced during a production downturn, strikes in the US, and a wider cost-of-living crisis.

Now, two years on, we are launching our second Money Matters survey to build a longer-term picture of the financial circumstances of people in the industry. Your responses will help shape our ongoing financial support work and inform policy discussions with industry stakeholders on your behalf. A report of the findings will be published in early 2026.

The survey will take around 10 minutes to complete.

Your responses won’t be submitted until you reach the end and click 'Finish Survey'. We therefore recommend completing the survey in one sitting. Before you begin, please read the following:

Who can take part?

  • Anyone working behind the scenes in film, TV, or cinema in the UK ‒ whether freelance or permanent employee ‒ is eligible.
  • This includes people in roles across the full production and exhibition value chain (at all levels of seniority), as well as people in corporate services roles such as sales, marketing, HR and legal.
Please note: individuals working solely as actors or other on-screen talent are not eligible. This scope reflects the Charity’s remit.

Confidentiality

  • The survey is completely anonymous, and all responses will be treated as confidential
  • Responses will only be used for this research and related work led by us and our not-for-profit research partners
  • Your data will never be sold or used for commercial purposes

Accessibility

If you require accessbility assistance in completing the survey, please contact research@filmtvcharity.org.uk. We endeavour to accomodate every request.

Income

We now ask some questions about your income.

We appreciate that this is sensitive information, but it is vital to help us understand the position that industry workers are facing in light of cost of living and other financial challenges.

Your financial information is anonymous. It will be grouped with other responses for reporting purposes and will not be published in any way that could identify you as an individual.

For example, if one month your pay was £2,000 and the next it was £1,500 or less ‒ or it was £2,500 or more ‒ you should answer “yes” at this question. We appreciate this might be a tricky question to answer. If you're not sure, select the 'don't know' option.

*Please note: by household income we mean your income plus the income of others you may live with and share your finances or expenses with, such as a partner or spouse (This would not include the income of flatmates or housemates you do not share finances with). We are asking questions about household income to better understand the domestic context in which people are managing their financial circumstances. If you prefer not to answer this question, please select ‘prefer not to say’.

Debt and savings

We now ask some questions about your debt, savings and pensions.

As with your income, we appreciate that this is sensitive information, but it is also crucial for allowing us to understand underlying elements of financial resilience and financial vulnerability of those working in the industry.

Please be assured, again, that the information you provide is anonymous. It will be grouped with other responses for reporting purposes and will not be published in any way that could identify you as an individual.

You and your work

In this section you will be asked about the areas of the film, TV and cinema industries that you usually work in. We appreciate that you may work across more than one of these areas and that some of these areas intersect.

However, at each question please select just one option based on the industry area that you most strongly identify with and/or accounts for most of your recent work. If answering on this basis is not possible for you, please answer based on your most recent job.
